Karine Gilanyan

Karine Gilanyan was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1981 into a family of musicians. She entered the Tchaikovsky School for Gifted Children in 1987, studying piano with N.Aharonyan, and following graduation in 1998 entered the Komitas Yerevan State Conservatory, studying piano with Professor Yavryan; she graduated in 2003 and then pursued post-graduate work with Prof. Yavryan, receiving the title of "Doctor of Art" in 2005. Karine has supplemented her institutional training with several Master classes - most recently with M.Egelhof in Germany. She is currently studying with American pianist James Tocco at the Musik Hoschschule in Lübeck, Germany.

Karine has performed as a soloist and with chamber ensembles in Armenia as well as in Italy and Hungary - at times even introducing chamber works within the context of her solo recitals. She recently performed a concert of Stravinsky's piano music at the International Modern Music Festival in Yerevan, organized by the Union of Composers of Armenia (2005). In addition, she has premiered in Armenia several piano works of Ligeti and Schnittke. Her repertory is quite large, and her obvious technical skills allow her to be equally at home with Classical, Romantic and modern works.
