Victor Khachatrian was born in Yerevan, Armenia in 1946, and began violin studies with Petros Haykazian while still a young child. By age 10, he was giving recitals and solo concerts, and attracting the attention of music lovers and critics alike. He graduated from the Yerevan State Conservatory Komitas in 1972, continuing there with post-graduate work with violinists Karp Dombayev and Leonid Kogan. Since graduation, Khachatrian has been a very active performer and teacher in Armenia. He has performed in hundreds of solo and chamber recitals, and has premiered many new works by Armenian composers - several of which have been dedicated to him. Between 1988 and 1995, he founded and led his own chamber ensemble, Ikar, whereby he perfected his conducting skills. Today he is a professor of violin at the Yerevan State Conservatory Komitas, performs as a frequent soloist with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and is a judging member of several Armenian violin competitions. Khachatrian was made an Honored Artist of Armenia in 1985. Khachatrian's repertory covers a wide gamut, from Bach, Brahms, and Paganini on the one side, to folk and modern works on the other, with particular emphasis on local composers. His playing is marked by a beautiful tone, keen musical intuition, and technical virtuosity. The recordings featured here at the Classical Archives are drawn from live performances given over the past several years.
"[Khachatrian] was talked about in the [Armenian] music world even before he graduated from the Conservatory, and quickly become a part of a very select circle of violinists."
Respublika Armenia
"High professionalism, vivid emotion, stylistic diversity, and perhaps more importantly, the depth and seriousness of [Khachatrian's] playing...leave the audience longing for another encounter."
Golos Armenii (Armenia)
