Eugeny Shabalin

Eugeny Shabalin, a young virtuoso on the balalaika, was born in 1974 in Alexandrov, Russia. He completed his music studies from the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music in Moscow in 1997, continuing with post-graduate work until 1999. Already, Mr. Shabalin has established himself as a leading specialist on the balalaika, through his activities as a performer, ensemble leader, teacher, and arranger.

Mr. Shabalin has gained award-winning recognition in a number of balalaika competitions, both Russian and international. He has already given more than 200 concerts - as a soloist, in duet with pianist Nataly Robotova, and with a number of top orchestras in Russia, particularly with those which specialize in the repertory of Russian folk instruments. Beyond concerts in Russia, Mr. Shabalin has performed in Canada, Western Europe, South Korea, and Japan. Within Russia he has performed in the leading concert halls, such as the Bolshoi and Rachmaninov Halls of the Moscow Conservatory.

Mr. Shabalin is also the leader of the Moscow-based ensemble Tarantas, which specializes in virtuoso arrangements of Russian folk material - most of which are by Mr. Shabalin. In addition, he is active as a professor, teaching balalaika at the Schnitke Moscow State Music Institute. The recordings presented here - with pianist Nataly Robotova, and with the group Tarantas - are spirited and quite impressive, and we are delighted to feature them at the Classical Archives.
